Schengen’s New Digital Entry/Exit System

Starting on November 10, 2024, all Schengen countries will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital framework that will replace traditional passport stamping for short stays by non-EU nationals. This major upgrade in border security is aimed at improving the tracking of travelers entering and leaving the Schengen area, enhancing both security and efficiency.

What is the EES?

The Entry/Exit System is an automated IT system designed to record data on non-EU travelers who are visiting Schengen countries for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period). This system will register:

  • The traveler’s name, type of travel document, and biometric data (fingerprints and a facial image).
  • Dates and places of entry and exit.

The EES will allow authorities to detect and monitor overstayers in real-time, ensuring that travelers adhere to the legal limits of their stays.

Why the Change?

The new system will replace the manual passport stamping process, which has been the traditional method for tracking the movement of non-EU nationals. By switching to a digital format, the Schengen zone aims to:

  • Improve Security: The EES will facilitate faster, more accurate identification of overstayers and potential security threats.
  • Streamline Border Crossings: With real-time data, European border authorities can process travelers more efficiently, reducing delays at border checkpoints.
  • Enhance Information Sharing: Authorities across Schengen countries will have access to centralized data, improving coordination and response times in case of issues.

Who Will Be Affected?

Who Will Be Affected?

All non-EU nationals traveling to Schengen countries for short stays will be subject to the EES. This includes tourists, business travelers, and family visitors who do not hold a residence permit or residence card within the EU. Notably, Cyprus and Ireland are exceptions, as they will continue stamping passports manually

Implications for Travelers

For non-EU travelers, the EES means faster processing at border control, though some may need to adapt to new procedures, such as using self-service kiosks at airports. Additionally, travelers should ensure that their stays do not exceed the legal limit, as the EES will automatically track entry and exit dates.
